Sailboats
usually have storage problems and because I have lived aboard I can say
my storage problems have been solved mostly by plastic storage
containers. Fiberglass or plastic storage containers are
economical,
easy to use, and versatile. They are helpful to the sailor
living
aboard and to the sailor just out for the day or weekend. Plastic
storage containers make storage of all different
kinds of items and
transportation of these items a snap.
Storing the food in the galley is one of the most important uses for plastic storage containers. On board a sailboat or living near the water, food must be kept free from moisture if you want it to last. Items such as pasta, crackers, chips, and rice need to be in plastic storage containers so they won’t get soft and moldy. Leftovers also go in plastic storage containers in the fridge on my sailboat. In the refrigerator I can stack them to make room for other items. I prefer plastic storage containers over glass because plastic doesn’t break. I know plenty of sailors who use glass on their boats and for me that is alright when I am at the dock but when sailing or out on the water I like plastic. One draw back of using plastic storage containers is losing the lid. I can’t tell you how many times I have hunted for a lid. Then I end up putting saran wrap on the top. The newer plastic containers have lids that snap to the bottom so they don’t get lost. I really like those. You can still stack them when not in use by stacking the lids and then the containers themselves on top of the lids. Also the newer plastic containers are made from material that will not stain or discolor and make for easy clean up. On a sailboat with limited water storage, no scrubbing and a quick rinse is an awesome delight when cleaning up.
Plastic storage containers are also made into colorful pitchers used for drinks. The lids twist on top so they won’t spill and they are durable for everyday use, perfect for a day on the water. I like the portable bottles also with the straws made into the lids. These are perfect for toddlers as well as grown ups. You can find plastic storage containers to fit almost any size and they can fill almost any purpose like a hamper for clothes, a bin for putting fruit or vegetables, or a canister for flour or coffee.
Storage for clothes on a boat like ours is also a problem to be overcome. Plastic storage containers make this easy to do. We sleep in the v berth which is the bow of the sailboat or the front of the sailboat. Under the mattress area are two large compartments for storage. We put our clothes in plastic storage containers to keep them from becoming damp. This solves the mold problem by keeping the clothes as dry as possible. Sometimes the boat smell that we all know and love can get off on our clothes. The boat smell is often a diesel and musty smell. If my husband needs a suit I usually have it cleaned before he wears it. His business meetings are better to attend when he doesn' t smell like the boat.

He uses the plastic storage containers in the sail locker as well to stay organized. He puts extra lines in one container, life jackets stacked and easy to reach in another one.
