Bahamas  Sailing

Have you ever seen posters or pictures of someone laying in the sails of a ship or on the boom of a sailboat?  That’s Bahamas sailing. Have you ever seen pictures or posters of aqua colored water or a crystal clear blue sea? That’s Bahamas sailing. Have you ever thought, ”Could that be me someday?”  Well, I have and I was and I will be again soon. I love Bahamas sailing!

To be in the Bahamas sailing or cruising is very different than being in the Bahamas on a beach vacation. It is Bahamas sailing or cruising vacations that are more peaceful. It is just you and the sun, the sea, and the sailing. When I first saw the islands of the Bahamas appear as I stood on deck I was amazed. In the middle of the ocean, in the middle of a sea I had just witnessed go from dark blue to an aqua or light blue and green depending on the depth, was something I had never seen. And as we got closer trees appeared and houses appeared painted bright yellows, green, pinks and blues. It was very beautiful. It is a short journey from Ft. Lauderdale to Nassau or Freeport but one worth taking again and again.

Just off the east coast of Florida, the Bahamas and Abacos delight people with their sailing, diving and snorkeling opportunities every day. As a true sailor we would try to go to bed with the sun and get up with the sun. But when tied up at the dock, the night life of the islands make it almost impossible. We didn’t want to miss anything. Larger islands like Grand Bahama Island have something happening most of the time. Like Wednesday night “Fish Fry” at Smith’s Point. This is an excellent way to meet locals and eat some great native fish. You don’t want to miss it!

Sailboats and power boats of all sizes cruise these waters of the Bahamas.  If you plan to do Bahamas sailing be sure to do what is required by law for you to have your boat there. Customs and Immigration is located at Port Lucaya Marina, Grand Bahama Island. The marina phone number is 242-373-9090 ext 323or 325.  Be sure to call them on the VHF for a pre-entry call for any details they might have. Boat entry to the Bahamas is a flat fee of $150.00 for boats 35 feet and under. For boats 36 feet and up it is $300.00 and this is for up to 4 people per vessel. This includes your cruising permit, fishing permit, Custom and Immigration charges and the $15.00 departure fee for up to 4 persons per vessel. Each additional person will be charged a $15.00 Departure fee. If you plan to stay over 12 months, special arrangements must be made with the Department of Customs and Immigration. This might seem like a lot to ask for Bahamas sailing but it is worth every penny.

Sailing the Bahamas has been a dream of ours for a long time. We are just starting to get to experience it. This is the first discussion in the attempt to inform and entertain you about Bahamas sailing and cruising and why we love it. We hope you enjoy the reading and we hope you can experience Bahamas sailing vacations for yourself.  This is a sailing journey you don't want to miss.
