Cruising the Bahamas gives you permission to have free time to do anything you want or nothing at all.  The tropical ease and beauty of the islands is something everyone should see and experience at least once in their lifetime, preferably more than once. A cruise is a slow, easy journey and that fits the lifestyle of the Bahamas perfectly. The Bahamas Cruising Guide: With the Turks and Caicos Islands is a great place to start because a cruising guide is always loaded with helpful interesting information.

Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is one of the main ports of call and one of the main points of interest when cruising the Bahamas. Located on New Providence Island, it is right next door to Paradise Island. In fact, they are connected by 2 bridges each 60 feet long. The aqua water of Nassau is breathtaking to see. The entrance to the harbor can be busy and the water sometimes choppy from activity and windy weather. There are 11 marinas near Nassau and Paradise Island but you should call ahead for availability. Many beautiful resorts and hotels, like Atlantis, are located on Paradise Island.  Most marinas have all the amenities like electric, shower houses, ships store, liquor store and laundry facilities. When cruising the Bahamas, be wise with your water usage. Water is at a premium in the islands.  Not all islands have a water system and the water must be trucked in. You can purchase water for about a dollar a gallon in most places. Bottled water is best for drinking.

Cruising the Bahamas
is a sight and sound extravaganza.  The beauty is breathtaking but why a sound extravaganza you might ask?  It is the sound of quiet streets, the whistling of the wind in the palm trees, and the sound of waves coming to the shore that adds to the beauty of the Bahamas. The quiet, rhythmic sound of the waves coming ashore will relax any sailor or visitor.

As for sight, there is so much beauty it is hard to take it all in. The emerald and turquoise sea is so beautiful it is hard to describe the emotion that goes along with looking at something so beautiful. The sand is white and on some islands it is pink as on the island of Eleuthera. Outlined by palm trees and thatched roofs it is one of the most beautiful cruising grounds on earth. In the Bahamas it is summer all year long so it is perfect for vacations anytime of year. The temperature varies only about 10 degrees from season to season or from day to night depending on the time of year you visit. On our recent trip at the end of June it was 84 degrees in the day and 80 degrees at night.  Fans and shade are helpful and essential when you are not in the water.

The closest island to the Florida east coast is Bimini, a must visit when cruising the Bahamas. Not only is it the closest it is one of the smallest islands. Bimini is 7 miles long and about 700yards wide. But don’t let the size fool you, Bimini is serene and small but not dull. There are lots of things to do on Bimini. One of the best sites is the Bimini Road on the floor of the ocean. Some believe it to be part of the lost world of Atlantis. In the 1930s Ernest Hemingway came to Bimini for the sport fishing and wrote his novel, Islands in the Stream . We are sailors but we like to fish and eat the fish we catch. In the Bahamas there is a large variety of fish and plenty of them. The Gulf Stream runs 2 miles off Bimini’s western coast. This gives cruising the Bahamas at Bimini great reefs with lots of fish, wrecks to dive and warm waters. The night life is a must do on Bimini also. Don’t miss the End of the World Saloon.

Cruising the Bahamas is wonderful because it is so close to Florida but one must use good judgment deciding when to make the crossing, deciding where to anchor and  finding a safe anchorage. There are no buoys to guide you into the islands so studying the charts ahead of time is a must. All this takes careful planning, knowledge of the weather, and learning to read the water depth by color. In the Bahamas it is usually windy so be prepared.  Boat Insurance From BoatUS is something every cruiser should have. Cruising the Bahamas lets you feel the wind, fill the sails and experience the dream.
