Nautical décor includes and is not limited to rattan indoor furniture, rattan outdoor furniture with weather resistant fabric on the cushions, bedding with sailboats or palm trees and clothing made to keep you cool or have an island appeal. Water fountains that make the sound of a waterfall or a babbling brook are also a part of nautical decor. Water is soothing to listen to or to look at. Nautical décor is never out of season or out of style. Nautical décor is part of a lifestyle.
Being a boater and having a love for the water I really like nautical décor in my house. We have a ships wheel stained the color of teak hanging in our foyer. Teak is a wood most boat builders like to use because of its natural ability not to warp, to fight off insects and to withstand the moisture in a marine environment. In my home in the mountains, I had a towel rod in my bathroom made of a paddle. Just think about it for a moment. A paddle is water proof and won’t rust. The perfect towel rod. In my shower, I had tiles featuring lighthouses. Lighthouses are very nautical. Our new house is in Florida and our bedroom has rattan furniture and a ceiling fan with teak colored blades.The walls are painted light colors just like the houses in the Bahamas or in the Keys. This gives our room a Key West or island feel which is very nautical and relaxing.
Outdoor furniture used indoors is another great idea for nautical décor. Usually the cushions of rattan furniture for outdoor use are made of a weather resistant fabric like Sunbrella or Island Sun N Shade . These great fabrics are water resistant, mildew resistant, dries quickly, doesn't fade in the sun, and lasts for many years out in the weather. Used inside, the rattan furniture can use the same material used with other furniture such as a cotton, a suede or suede-like fabric or a cotton blend. These fabrics are very soft and there are many patterns to choose from with a nautical and island feel. They are very beautiful.
Lamps in the shape of a lighthouse, a mirrow in the shape a porthole, fan blades that are thatched-like in appearance are all nautical décor. Table tops of glass with a ships wheel or a row boat for the base are a couple of my favorites. I also like this Bronze Lighthouse Doorbell. In my family room we have a table made from a large ship's door. Nautical décor is usually a great conversation piece for company whether they are first time visitors or friends that come by frequently. My husband really wants to put a Tiki Bar outside near our patio for entertaining. Tiki lights and good company already make for a great BBQ. When he adds the Tiki bar with a thatched roof that will be awesome!

Nautical décor is beautiful, comfortable and fun to have around. It reminds me of places we have sailed and when I am away from the water it makes me feel closer to it. Nautical décor is a delight.
