Remote Controlled Sailboats

Remote controlled sailboats are a lot of fun to sail. Whether you like smooth sailing or rough seas, remote controlled sailboats will let you feel the wind and enjoy watching the sailboat glide as you control its movements. Carefree sailing is the thought for the day and radio sailing is the way to do it.

There are many remote controlled sailboats to choose from.   Remote controlled sailboats are built to scale models or semi scale models. Some have dacron sails, some have nylon sails.  Hulls are usually made of wood or a fiberglass composite that keeps its shine and allows for durability,or a little rough handling.  Mast and boom on remote controlled sailboats are usually made of spruce or aluminum or a carbon fiber. This allows for easier transportation and great sailing even in light winds. All sailboats are ecological by nature as their main source of power is the wind. As the wind blows, the sailboat goes and is steered by the captain of the ship. To see the Paradise Sailboat in action check out the video on this page.

To sail these remote controlled sailboats the electronics are water tight and come already installed on some models. Some of the larger remote controlled sailboats have a Sail Winch that gives these larger sailboats huge power, 12 pounds of pull and 152oz/inch of torque. So when the sails are up and the wind is blowing, the sailor can remotely control the sails to make the sailboat go faster in the direction you want  it to go. They sail just like the real sailboats. As you turn the bow into the wind and the sails change sides or "comes about" and then the boat takes off in the other direction. And just like the real sailboats, when the wind is blowing from the stern, you set the sails "wing on wing" or one sail on each side of the boat and the boat sails with the wind. A winch servo really does help you pull the sails in tighter and the sailboat sail faster.

Another aspect of controlling the direction of the sailboat is the keel and rudder. The keel is weighted for balance and it also keeps the sailboat going straight without a lot of side slip. Some  radio controlled or remote controlled sailboat models have a ballast bulb that works great in deep water. The rudder steers the sailboat. The direction of the boat is accomplished by wind combinations and  pointing the remote controlled sailboat in the direction you want to go by steering the rudder. The remote controlled sailboat will sail a close reach, a broad reach and like stated above wing on wing just like the real sailboats.

Remote controlled sailboats are fun and when you get a few together on the water for a race or regatta it is even more fun.  Kids and grown-ups alike have great fun at these sailboat races.  Some can be built by the owner, Build Your Own Radio Controlled Yacht, and some come already assembled.  Anyway you do it, as the LA  Times said "Art you can play with".

These pictures are of the South Daytona RC Model Yacht Club. It was a very hot day with some very nice people. "The simplicity of sailing makes it easy to get into, but the complexity of the trade-offs involved will keep even the most active mind occupied for a lifetime." (Model Yachting Magazine issue #146 by Jack Gregory)
