  Scuba Diving Vacation

In 1960 the sport of scuba diving was born and 20 years later it has become a sought after vacation experience. Now in 2007 a scuba diving vacation is not just for the rich but for any one with the basic equipment and a few extra dollars to rent the rest of the equipment can have the ultimate scuba diving vacation.Today scuba diving is a multi-billion dollar industry and it is well regulated.

Everyone wants a vacation that is hard to forget and a scuba diving vacation is one way to accomplish that. You don’t have to be a certified diver to do this as everyone thinks you do. Most resorts that offer scuba diving vacations or offer scuba diving as an extra excursion that you can sign up for, offer what they call a “sample dive”. This is usually a 4 hour course given by a certified instructor from the resort that includes pool time as well. Their main concern is to keep you safe in the water under their watch, so to speak. This mini course allows you time in the water with your instructor to a depth of 40ft or less. You can scuba dive as much as you want for a 2 week period, always with the instructor, and always a shallow dive of 40ft or less. I think this is a very good introduction to the underwater world and it gives people the opportunity to decide if scuba diving is a sport they want to continue. This can be a great way to take a scuba diving vacation.

If scuba diving is something you would want to continue, certification is a must and it is not free and it is not easy. To have a rewarding scuba diving vacation or weekend experience you have to know how to handle yourself underwater, you have to know how to handle the equipment and you need to know how to react in a wide range of underwater situations. The certification for scuba diving teaches you all of this.  A good place to start learning is The Certified Diver's Handbook: The Complete Guide to Your Own Underwater Adventures

Scuba diving certification courses are offered at many locations such as dive shops, the YMCA and scuba diving schools. In 1960 NAUI, The National Association Of  Underwater Instructors was formed to regulate and teach scuba diving. In 1967 PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors was formed.  This keeps the certification and everything being taught concise, equal to everyone, and up to date with techniques and new equipment and new information for safety when you are underwater. Each of these organizations has a certificate you can get.  PADI Scuba Diver Certificate is an easier course that will get you ready for your first dive.  NAUI is more involved. Through NAUI you can advance to a master diver or a rescue diver certificate.  NAUI also has certificates for night diving, underwater photography, and ice diving.

Scuba diving is a sport so you should be in pretty good shape. You have to pass a swim test to start and you must be 15 years old or older. You have to have your own mask, fins and snorkel at most courses but the rest of the equipment you can rent. Most courses that are offered by dive shops can provide you with whatever you need that they want you to have of your own right there. The rest they usually have available to rent. The best dive shops that offer the scuba diving course are the ones that have been in business the longest. The ones that are new and offer you something you think is too good to be true usually is.

There are many kinds of dives to do when on a scuba diving vacation so you need to plan ahead to make sure where you are going offers the kind of diving you want to do. Cozumel, Mexico offers 200 ft of visibility in pristine water with lots of reefs and gentle currents. A drift divers dream. Fiji Islands, South Pacific offers year round diving and is the soft coral capital or the world. This is a favorite place for underwater photographers. The Cayman Islands offers 80-150 ft of visibility on a good day at the shallow reefs that are next to massive drop offs to a 12,000ft abyss. Florida, US is the best in North America. A Diver's Guide to Reef Life will have you identifying all the wild life you encounter. Florida’s entire Gulf and Atlantic coast lines are full of what makes a scuba diving vacation wonderful. The Gulf has better visibility but the Atlantic has reefs and wrecks. The Florida Keys has warm water and tropical colorful fish of all kinds.  A salt water aquarium lets you bring some of the underwater world into your office, living room or den.
Saltwater Aquarium Fish at LiveAquaria.com has great deals on fish and coral.
The allure and mystery of the underwater world has intrigued the human imagination for centuries. From the real life pearl divers that hold their breaths to dive for pearls in the South Pacific to the myth of monsters of the science fiction of Jules Verne, the TV shows like Sea Hunt, and movies like The Abyss all keep the intrigue alive. The state of the art technology makes it all possible, more comfortable and more affordable.  Scuba diving vacations are one way to get away from the routine and actually visit another world.
