Small Sailboats

Small sailboats are a perfect way to learn to sail.  Don't think because small sailboats are pint size that they don't go as fast or can't measure up or that they can't run with the wind because they can.  Small sailboats are as fast as the wind.  Is it possible to go faster than the wind?  On my page, Fast Sailboats, there is a lot of useful information about boats that go faster than the wind.

One type of a small sailboat is a Force Five.   A friend of mine had one and it was awesome. It had one sail but that one sail gave her a lot of speed.  She was 14 ft long and had her own trailer.  There are a lot of informative videos on every aspect of sailing.  The more you know about sail trim and wind direction the easier it will be to make your small sailboat go as fast as the wind.  Order you video today to buy or rent.

Another type of small sailboat is called a Snipe.  The one you see pictured here is the one we had.  She had 2 sails, was 16ft long and had a wooden mast and boom.  With the increase in sail area she would really go!  Small sailboats are fun to sail and with the wind in the sails, the crew can "hike out" over the side.  This lets the boat heel which puts less drag in the water that would slow the sailboat down. Heeling, or leaning, means there is less of the bottom of the sailboat in the water to cause drag or friction which slows the sailboat.  Small sailboats are very quick to respond to the wind because they are very lightweight and this combined with a large sail area allows the sailboat to go fast.  Trim or adjust the sails according to the direction of the wind and you will have a perfect combination to sail very fast.  This is easy to learn but takes time on the water, sometimes a lifetime, to perfect.  You may get a little wet but getting wet is part of the fun of a small sailboat!
Dinghies Racing on Sunlit Sea
There are many companies that have blueprints for different styles of sailboats if you are a boater who wants to build his or her own small sailboat.  They also have accessories for your trailer or boat dolly.  Some of these companies have a sail loft offering up to a 30% savings on new sails.
You can find everything you need to build an open small sailboat like a Force Five, Snipe or Pram.  Also, for sailboats that you can use for coastal and off shore sailing, they have sailboat plans that have inside accommodations.  They also have designs for canoes and dinghies.  These smaller boats can be made to be used with oars, sails or a small motor.

When the vacations or weekends are over, these small sailboats can be parked in a garage, or along side a house or in an apartment building parking spot.  With the Snipe we owned, we brought the boom and tiller into the house and hung them on the wall as wall art.  This kept the wood beautiful and the conversations flowing.  Friends wanted to know all about the small sailboat that these were a part of.

Check the yellow pages of your town for a sailing club or association near you.  They may have a sailing school and it can be a great way for families and friends to get together and learn to sail.
These small sailboats are the best way to learn to sail and the fastest way to make a good sailor.
