Portholes A
porthole by
definition is a small, generally circular, window used on the hull of
ships to admit light and air. In days of old when men were down below
for long lengths of time to have a porthole and to have it open was a
wonderful sight. Most portholes in the old wooden ships
could be opened
and closed but they were not water tight by any means. On todays modern
boats, most portholes can be opened and closed and are watertight as
well. They can be made with clear or smoked glass also.
Light Pours in Through Porthole Windows on a Sunken Boat Photographic Print Touzon, Raul Buy at AllPosters.com All boats have portholes in their hulls for ventilation purposes. Some are round, some are square and some are rectangle. Some open manually and some are just for adding to the beauty of the vessel. One of my favorite sailboats is the Formosa 51. It has portholes across the stern. The Formosa 51 was featured in the movie "Captain Ron" Buy at AllPosters.com Portholes can be made from metal, plastic, or wood. Mostly on sailboats they are plastic or metal unless of course it is a wooden boat and then they can be wood as well. Some are set into the hull and some are on the side of the upper deck. Everyone must remember to close these portholes that are on the side of the upper deck when washing the sailboat or water will go down below and things will get wet that usually one would not want to get wet. It happened to me and it nearly ruined my computer. We sat it in front of a fan for a while to help dry it out. Luckily all I lost was the DVD player but I really thought I was going to have to buy a new computer. Now I try to remember to close all hatches and portholes before washing the deck. Many decorating ideas also involve a porthole for a frame. Some of these actually open and close and some do not. Some examples are a porthole frame for a mirror or clock. There are tables made from portholes, bookends made of portholes, picture frame portholes, porthole ashtrays and the list keeps on going. There is even a magazine called The Porthole, a bar called The Porthole, and even a TV station called The Porthole. CafePress.com has many unique designs of portholes for T-shirts that you can apply or you can buy them already on the t-shirts. U.S. Troops Returning from Europe Fill Every Porthole as the Hms Queen Elizabeth Pulls into a Pier Photographic Print Buy at AllPosters.com Many ideas from sailors and boaters have made their way into the lives of landlubbers. We call it 'Nautical Decor'. Nautical items like a porthole with a mirrow, an anchor in the yard, or a chain used for a bracelet or for a fence are beautiful no matter where they are used. They are useful and attractive for sail or power boaters and landlubbers as well. I have heard people say that our eyes are "the portholes to our soul". Small openings to let in the light. Openings to let us see what is around us. I really enjoy looking out of the portholes on our boat while we are underway and watching the scenery pass. I also like waking up in the morning and looking out the porthole to see the sky and check the weather. Portholes are unique little windows. |
